A SYSTEMS VIEW OF TRAINING

A SYSTEMS VIEW OF TRAINING

Training can be viewed as three distinct systems, evaluation, instruction, and maintenance. These systems describe the events that occur before. during. and after the learning process Three separate and distinct activities make up each of the three systems, as noted below:

The Evaluation System Before designing or delivering instruction. we must evaluate three things (a process often referred to as needs assessment or performance analysis)

  • the “Entering Behavior” of the trainees…………knowledge attitudes and skills
  • the “Terminal Behavior” of the course…………desired performance of trainees at work
  • the work environment……….factors that help or hinder performance back on the Job

The Instruction System The design and delivery of a training program typically follows a three-stage 'earning model as illustrated and outlined below

  • Acquisition…….the trainee must acquire new knowledge altitudes skills (KAS)
  • Demonstration……examples illustrations cases modes bring the KAS to life
  • Application………..the trainee must practice and apply new KAS with hands-on activities

The Maintenance System After trainees have completed a course we must maintain three things to insure fu I return on the training investment

  • performance on the job…..it must he inspected recognized and reinforced
  • the course itself….it must be refined revised and kept current with needs
  • evaluation measures…….data is needed so as to maintain performance and the course
